Having a Bad Day? 6 Ways to Boost Your Mood

You can’t be beaming and happy every day, it just doesn’t work that way.  I blog all about happiness and I have days where I want to curl up on the couch and never get up.  We can’t be happy all of the time, but when we aren’t happy, it kind of sucks!  These 6 things are not designed to fix all of the troubles in your life, but if you are looking for a quick pick me up, look no further.

Music

Music can have a huge effect on your mood, both positive and negative.  If you are having a bad day, listening to a bunch of sad break-up songs is not going to help. Music is so influential to our brains, one song can cause a dramatic shift in mood.  Your wedding song, a song that makes you remember that one time you and…well we won’t talk about that.

The point is, music is a great way to give you a quick mood boost.  Make yourself a playlist of songs that make you smile. Here is a link to mine if you would like some ideas (warning, it is heavy on country music)

Funny Podcasts

As much as I enjoy inspirational podcasts, when I am having a bad day, having someone tell me how I can conquer the world is not what I want to hear.  Comedy shows, on the other hand, give me a quick laugh and can make me forget about my troubles – at least for a 30-minute podcast.

Everyone’s sense of humor is a little different, but you can check out this list of top comedy podcasts to give you a few to try.

Audio Books

For some reason, it always seems like I find myself in a bad mood when I am stuck in traffic.  Hmmm perhaps it’s the surroundings.  If you find your commute into or home from work brain draining, listening to an audio book can make your commute much happier.  I use Amazon Unlimited to download audio books (because I am cheap), but you can also use Audible. Just remember to pay attention to where you are going!  I was so into a book I drove right past my exit!

If you are a member of Amazon Unlimited and you see a book with the label “read or listen for free” just hit that button, and use the Audible app on your phone or tablet to listen to the book.  You can still listen to the book for free without joining Audible.

Comfort Food

The past three things have all had to do with hearing, but sometimes you need to get a little lift from the inside out. Even if you are on a diet, sometimes everyone needs a little comfort food.  Don’t over do it, but a little ice cream or one donut never hurt anyone.

One trick to keep you from over doing it on the comfort food is to only buy a small amount.  Instead of a half gallon of ice cream, buy a small container.  Instead of buying a dozen donuts, just buy one donut.  This way you can get a little lift, without feeling guilty later.

 

Light a Candle

Every once in a while I walk into a farm stand, inhale deeply and am transported back to my Grandmother’s porch. The smell of apple pie baking, the light scent of fresh flowers and the slight tang of the vinegar she used to make pickles fills the air. It is amazing the power scent can have on your mood.  Scents stay with us and they can remind us of some amazing experiences and they can be a great way to get a quick mood lift.

A candle can’t quite capture the scent of my grandmother’s porch, but they can come close enough to trigger those memories.  I like this one from Country Jar (and I like the jar). The scent isn’t quite Grandma’s porch, but it is close enough to remind me of the days I spent hanging out there and tasting all her great food.

You don’t have to stick with one scent; maybe lemon reminds you of a great time, or the scent of lavender takes you back to that beautiful spa you visited in the Caribbean. Whatever your scent, light your candle to put some light into your mood (such a bad pun!)

Praying

Matthew 11:28-30  

Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light

The Lord is there for us and saying a quick prayer can lighten our load and boost our mood.  Sometimes we just need someone to listen to us whine or work out a problem and we can do that through prayer.  This is especially true on those days you know you are grouchy but you just can’t figure out why!  Which of course makes you more cranky.  Taking a minute and asking God for clarity and wisdom can help us find the source of our crank, and make it go away.

God is not going to make the traffic jam go away, but praying for a safe journey is always a good idea.  Every time I am forced to drive in Atlanta there is a lot of praying going on!

    Great tips.I always find music as a great way to fix the mood.I also love to read a book or simply walk outside if I have some time to do so…
